INSPRING MINDS HOME TUITION, based in Accra, Ghana, is an after school teaching program designed to help university students generate additional income while providing support to the needed.
We had the opportunity to email interview the Founder of Inspiring Minds Home Tuition, Kwabena Akuffo, who’s part of the Africans Building Africa Community.
- Tell us about yourself and your organization
I am an engineer with a strong passion for teaching and research work. I hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Geomatic Engineering from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. I was formerly a Geographic Information System Analyst at Rudan Engineering Limited and also the Head of Public Relations and Social Media at Wishes Alliance.
I am the Founder and CEO of Inspiring Minds Home Tuition in Accra, Ghana. Inspiring Minds Home Tuition Service is a serving to nurture, inspire, challenge and promote the growth of all students. We offer quality one-on-one home tuition for all subjects and levels.
- How much did you need to start your organization and how were you able to raise that capital?
You need passion, a good network and less than 100 Ghana Cedis. I said passion because if you are not passionate about teaching or education you can’t start. Also you need people to recommend your services to get clients. Since the capital is not enormous, I raised it from my savings.
- What are some of the challenges you face in your organization and how do you overcome those challenges?
Some of the challenges I face is marketing and also getting qualified tutors to teach. Since most of my employees work part-time, I don’t have enough time to review their performances but our team has been working on resolving it. We now have a performance review form for both our tutors and clients.
- Where do you see your organization in 5 years from now and what steps are you taking today to reach that objective?
I see my business in every region in Ghana employing a lot of Ghanaians and also helping students in school gain extra income from working with us. In the next few years, we would launch our website so that our clients and job seekers can have an easy platform to engage with us. We also have plans of building more partnerships with government agencies and schools across Ghana.
Additionally, we have plans in place to hire young graduates who are passionate about entrepreneurship to build a team of employees who want to grow with us.
- What advice would you give other entrepreneurs looking to start a business in Africa?
Be passionate about whatever you want to do and accept disappoints and failures whenever it comes around. Nothing great is achieved without enthusiasm. Also, try to build a good team and raise enough capital to start.
- How is your business participating to the development of Africa?
We are creating employment for some individuals and helping students in the university have access to extra income while studying. Members of our team volunteer in community projects such as the “Raising Readers Initiative” that’s focused on incorporating the habit of reading in children.
